Why Queensway?
One of the Oldest Shopping Malls in Singapore
Built in 1974, Queensway Shopping Centre is undoubtedly one of Singapore’s first few shopping centres. A quick Google search will lead one to many articles citing the mall as one of Singapore’s veteran shopping centres filled with a rich history and many fond memories shared by those who frequent the mall. Hence, our group thought that it will be interesting to find out how the mall has changed over the years and its relevance in modern Singapore.
Possibility of En Bloc
Like many old buildings in Singapore, Queensway Shopping Centre might be a potential candidate for an en bloc sale in the future. However, unlike other older shopping centres that usually only appeal to the older generations, Queensway Shopping Centre caters to both the young and the old. Hence, it will be interesting to find out how existing tenants and customers that frequent the mall feel about the possibility of an en bloc and the precious memories they have made in this mall, should the mall be demolished in the future.
Specialised shopping center well-known to Singaporeans
Queensway Shopping Centre has not generated much buzz in the media in recent years. However, Queensway Shopping Centre is best known as the to-go place for sports apparels, printing services, eyewear and more. While business has declined over the years due to the emergence of new shopping malls and online shopping, it stills remains a nostalgic place that has been standing strong ever since it was built.
